“Right now, they are on their way to Hungary and our volunteers in Hungary are on standby, they were able to get on a bus with Indian citizens who are being moved by their government, and they were fortunate enough to get on that bus.”

This comes invading Russian forces continue into Ukraine as Moscow orders its troops to advance "from all directions" as gains on the Ukrainian military with cruise missiles.

Speaking to Jacaranda FM news on Sunday, Kganyago says once the South African citizens make it to the airport, volunteers are on standby to offer accommodation

“They’re on the way to the airport, immediately when they get to the airport our volunteers will be able to pick them up and provide them with accommodation and essentials they may need.

“It's not just students, we do have an elderly gentleman who is on his way to Poland I’m sure he’s close to the border by now. We also have a South African volunteer soon.”

Meanwhile, University of Johannesburg Professor Aleksei Oskolski a Russian citizen living in South Africa, says they organized Sunday’s protest action at Mandela Square to show solidarity with Ukraine.

“As you know a few days ago Russia invaded the Ukraine, I am a Russian citizen and live in South Africa and we feel very ashamed of this aggressive war from our country.

"We want to express solidarity with Ukraine, we support that this is an absolutely unjust war with no reasonable justification.”

“We can assure that not all the Russians support this war,” says Oskolski

He further adds that government should show solidarity with Ukraine as the war is unjust

“The South African government must show that it doesn’t support Russia politically. It must demonstrate solidarity with Ukraine.  Ukraine is defending it’s own country and sovereignty and it’s important to show that politically that South African supports that.”
