SA surges past 900k Covid-19 cases

South Africa has officially recorded more than 900 000 coronavirus infections.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize released the latest figures on Friday.
8 725 new infections were confirmed, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 901 538.
The rapid spread of the second wave of infections can be attributed to a severe variant of the coronavirus detected in the country.

274 more deaths were recorded, with the Western Cape reporting the most coronavirus related fatalities over the past 24-hours at 101.
The Eastern Cape is second with 92, followed by KwaZulu-Natal at 56.
The total number of Covid-19 fatalities was at 24 285 on Friday.
