SA weather services workers unhappy

Workers at the SA Weather Service (Saws) are so unhappy with the climate at work they have decided to boycott the Employment Recognition Awards ceremony to be held on Friday.

Turning up the heat on management, workers belonging to the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu), complained that they were being “threatened and intimidated to attend the so-called employee awards”.

Hot under the collar, weather services employees claimed the awards ceremony only “benefits the top management”. They said only 1% of the employees have ever been given awards.

Nehawu said: “Employees were told if they do not attend they will be dealt with decisively, two employees have already been suspended for challenging top management on labour issues”.

Apart from being peeved that managers were getting “fat bonuses” workers at Saws complained that they were being forced to disclose if they had “intimate relationships” at work.

Workers complained that management had awarded itself salary hikes of 10% while workers were only given rises of 6.5%.

The workers also wanted to know why management was getting bonuses at a time when Saws was not making any profits – Saws made a loss of 26%, the union said.

Apparently an employee was suspended for asking management why the awards event was named “Employment Recognition Awards” when in fact it was a ceremony to “award top management”.

Nehawu said it was holding a meeting Friday with members employed at the weather services to deal with the flood of grievances.

Saws management were not immediately available for comment.
