Thandeka Mgoduso was the board chair and a non-executive director at South African Airways (SAA)

Her resignation comes ahead of the Finance Minister Tito Mboweni 's Medium-Term Policy Budget Statement (MTBPS) which may announce further bailout to cash-strapped state-owned enterprises (SOEs), especially SAA.

Mboweni will table the mini budget in Parliament on Wednesday.

Spokesperson for the Department of Public Enterprises Sam Mkokeli says a new interim board will be announced soon.

"Minister Pravin Gordhan has expressed his gratitude for her contribution and efforts in steering the business towards a more sustainable future.

"A new interim board will be announced as part of the work to create a new and completely restructured SAA. It will work with a new executive team to take the airline to the skies in the new year.”
