African Airways (SAA) has described it as disturbing, several incidents where passengers were robbed of
their cell phones.
The robbers are apparently targeting passengers while they are sleeping on the airplane - high up in the air.
SAA has confirmed that personal items of passengers were stolen aboard a flight from Johannesburg to Hong Kong on Monday.
“Two passengers have complained that they lost valuables whilst they were asleep,” says spokesperson Tlali Tlali.
Chinese authorities were called when the plane landed and the alleged perpetrators were identified.
“The missing items were found elsewhere in the aircraft and were returned to their owners.”
This is apparently not the first incident of this nature.
“Incidents of this nature happens to many airlines all over the world,” was Tlali’s response on reports that millions in stolen goods were reported to the airline’s management.
The airliner says it is profiling passengers to “ensure incidents of this nature are reduced if not removed completely”.
“It is a matter of concern, whether they are flying, driving, walking they would want to have the security.”
Tlali advised passengers to “take steps to ensure they take protection of their personal belongings and valuable items to ensure they are not inconvenienced by incidents of this nature”.
