SAA wants NPA, Hawks to investigate ‘dodgy contracts’

South African Airways (SAA) has handed over nine reports for the Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to investigate.

The reports emanate from an internal forensic investigation by the airline.


The Sunday Times reported that a flight that was on its way to Cape Town from Johannesburg suddenly nosedived, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing.


The newspaper said preliminary investigations by SAA confirmed that there may be a possibility that its aircraft were serviced with parts supplied by “an international crime syndicate”.


SAA spokesperson Tlali Tlali says the airline lodged an internal investigation after an allegation of corrupt tenders were brought to the attention state-owned company.


The internal investigation probed the period of 2015 to 2017.


“Nine matters were put together in the  form of reports that has been handed over to the Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority in order for them to look  at a possibility of finalizing criminal investigations and bringing the identified individuals in front of the courts to answer to criminal cases,” says Tlali.


Tlali says the preliminary report points to a syndicate looting million from the state-owned company.


“What has opened in the process is that a number of other individuals have since been arrested and their matters are currently are before the courts, and we are waiting for the finalization of those matters.”
