A member of the South African National Air Force is set to appear in court on Thursday in connection with the kidnapping of two women in Winterveld, northwest of Tshwane, in 2022.
The 38-year-old suspect, who was arrested on Wednesday, is expected to appear in the Garankuwa Magistrate’s Court.
The two victims were kidnapped at gunpoint in November 2022 after responding to an online advert for a music mixer.
In recent years, there has been a spike in scammers impersonating companies, investments, financial scams, multiplication schemes and pyramid schemes.
In December, the National Consumer Commission teamed up with the Southern African Fraud Prevention Services to curb the increase of schemes and scams that leave South Africans with empty pockets.
Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuluwi said the suspect works for the Air Force.
“A substantial amount of money was transferred from the victims to the suspect's bank account. The suspect was traced and arrested at his workplace on 6 February. The suspect, who is an employee at the National Air Force, is expected to appear before Garankuwa Magistrate’s Court on 8 February, together with four other suspects, who were arrested a while ago on the same case.”
