SAAPA wants SAHRC to probe Enyobeni tavern tragedy
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
The Southern African Alcohol Policy Alliance wants the Human Right Commission to investigate the deaths of 21 young people at a tavern in East London.
SAAPA has lodged a complaint with the commission.
The alliance's Terri-Liza Fortein says they are aware of the charges against the owner, but they are calling for an independent inquiry into the June tragedy.
"We also want the Human Rights Commission to look outside of the tavern owners, to say to government and authorities 'How did this happen on your watch? You are supposed to keep South Africans safe.
"Children under the age of 18 are not supposed to be consuming alcohol. How do we work to strengthen legislation and enforcement to ensure that this doesn't happen again?"
The SAHRC's provincial manager Eileen Carter says they are looking into the issue.
"The Human Rights Commission opened its own file in order to more closely determine what has happened in this regard.
"So we have our own matter and after receiving the SAAPA matter, we consolidated that matter into our own investigation and that we is where we are currently at."
