Union Solidarity has confirmed the journalists received a letter from the public broadcaster, stating they are dismissed with immediate effect.

Solidarity's general secretary Dirk Hermann said: "The journalists just received a letter that they are dismissed with immediate effect without any hearing. The SABC believes the journalists will continue to show disrespect to management."

Termination letters were issued to Krivani Pillay, Jacques Steenkamp, Foeta Krige and Suna Venter.

Solidarity has been representing the four in the Labour Court.

The group were recently suspended for speaking out against editorial policy changes at the SABC.

The corporation has banned the broadcasting of destruction of property during protests as well as newspaper headlines.

Solidarity has been representing the four in the Labour Court.

They are among eight journalists who are taking the public broadcaster to the Constitutional Court.

"We will go to court on Thursday to ask the court to review the SABC's decision to dismiss these journalists. We also want the court to overturn any disciplinary action taken against them," Hermann said.

He said the SABC's actions were "absolutely shocking"

"I have never in my life heard of such disciplinary action being taken. It's as if the SABC has no regard for any legal process."

The SABC was not immediately available for comment, but has reportedly said it will not discuss its labour matters with the media.
