SABC 'notes with concern' video of staffer's airplane rant

A video of the woman’s altercation with flight attendants and other passengers was widely shared on various social media platforms.

The SABC issued a statement following the conduct of Nobuntu Mkhize on a FlySAfair flight after she was seen physically and verbally clashing with flight attendants, allegedly over her demand to be served an alcoholic drink.
News24 reports that Mkhize made her first court appearance on Friday, on a charge of contravening the Civil Aviation Act for disruptive behaviour on board an aircraft.
However, the case was temporarily withdrawn pending further investigation and the possible addition of more charges including assault and crimen injuria.
The public broadcaster says it regrets the incident, and always encourages staff to uphold its values of respect and integrity in all their interactions.
According to the publication, Mkhize confirms that the altercation arose when a flight attendant refused to serve her, however, she denied that she wanted an alcoholic beverage and that she was intoxicated.
The SABC also distanced itself from Mkhize’s claim that the incident would be broadcast on its news platforms.
“We would like to reiterate that SABC News is guided by the Editorial Code and maintains its editorial independence and the decision pertaining to all news are made in the newsroom and not influenced by non-editorial staff members,” said spokesperson Mmoni Seopelo.
She said the SABC would use the available internal channels to engage Mkhize.
