SABC Workers prepare to fight back

Members of the Communications Workers Union (CWU) have resolved to kick off a programme of action on Wednesday against the decision by the SABC to go ahead with retrenchments.

CWU's General Secretary, Aubrey Tshabalala, says the union's members are facing an "enemy disguised as the new SABC management."

"They have shown no interest to listen to a second opinion," says Tshabalala.

He alleges the board has refused to engage with government, or to listen to unions on the matter.

"On top of that, we feel they are not fit to lead the SABC, we think that they must go."

The CWU has also called for the dissolvement of the board of the embattled public broadcaster.

The struggling SABC announced last week it plans on retrenching 981 permanent and over 1200 contract workers.

However, Tshabalala says they held talks with their members on Monday who are in agreement that the management decision is unacceptable.

Tshabalala says on Friday members will picket outside the SABC and hand over a memorandum of demands to management of the national broadcaster, as well as the Minister of Communications, Nomvula Mokonyane.

He adds on Wednesday members are expected to wear black clothes, to illustrate that the workers are mourning what the SABC management is doing.
