SABC8 will continue to fight

Dismissed journalists at the SABC say issues at the public broadcaster run much deeper than COO's Hlaudi Motsoeneng's censorship policy.

Represented by trade union Solidarity, four of the axed journalists have approached the Labour Court to ask for their dismissals to be set aside.

Proceedings have been postponed to tomorrow to allow the SABC to file opposing papers.

It remains to be seen whether the broadcaster's decision to now reverse the policy, will have an effect on the dismissals

Dubbed the SABC8, the reporters were suspended for challenging the ban on the broadcast of violent protests.

Suspensions soon turned into dismissals, following the news that the eight have approached the Constitutional Court for direct access.

Two of the SABC's sacked reporters, Thandeka Gqubule and Busisiwe Ntuli attended proceedings in support of their colleagues.

Gqubule said they will continue the fight - until the SABC is turned back into a true public broadcaster.

"The protest policy is only a slither of the slew of policies and draconian anti-journalistic practices. You can withdraw the protest policy, but still have an environment that is not conducive to the practice of ethical journalism," she said.
