SACC: Churches must abide by lockdown restrictions
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
The South African Council of Churches (SACC) has urged its members to follow the lockdown regulations set down to curb the spread of COVID-19.
SACC says that it is aware of the inconvenience the 21-day lockdown will cause to worship.
The organisation’s spokesperson Moagisi Sibanda says churches should not be the channel of the mass infection, as was the case in South Korea.
"This may exacerbate domestic tensions in families, with an increase of domestic violence and other unfortunate extremities.
"Elderly people and some people with disabilities, who regularly need someone to come from outside to assist them with certain essential support, will be hard pressed to cope.”
Sibanda adds that announcements will be made around special prayers over the Easter period.
"We urge all SACC member churches, the greater religious and faith communities, and the society at large to abide by the laws and regulations that have been instituted.”
