SACC echoes Tutu’s calls for ‘peace in the holy land’

The South African Council of Churches (SACC) has made a list of suggestions on how to carry forward the late Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu’s legacy as the country mourns the death of the activist and humanitarian.

SACC general-secretary Bishop Malusi Mpumlwana made the comments during a memorial service held for Tutu in Pretoria on Thursday.

It’s one of many services held in his honour while he lies in state at the St George’s Cathedral in Cape Town.

Tutu will be cremated on Saturday and his ashes interred at the historic church in the legislative capital of SA on Saturday.

Mpumlwana told mourners Tutu would be rabble-rousing even in the afterlife in the pursuit of justice.

“I begin with the one that seems almost intractable - the peace of the holy land. This generation has to address this matter and resolve it for the peace and security for the people of Israel and Palestine.

“Together with the leaders of the Anglican churches, the SACC church leaders resolved to work with the Vatican and the world council of churches to engage both the leading Muslim leaders and the Jewish leaders in the world in seeking solutions that make sense to the people of faith."

Mpumlwana added a viable solution include a two-party state or a single non-racial, non-ethnic democratic state with equal value for all.

He admits neither would be an easy feat.

“Above all and to make the other matters work, South Africa needs a reconciled politics such as Tutu would have achieve.

“A country that is going to become a united country needs to have a sense that there a certain things about which we no bicker politically.

“There is a sacred safe space that all political parties can agree on which is essential for the foundations of a united society. This is missing in South Africa.”

The SACC has called on the South African government to follow the Arch’s lead in service of the people.
