Despite his many years of imprisonment Nelson Mandela refused to have his dream of freedom and democracy taken away, the Southern African Development Community Council of NGOs said on Saturday.
"Prisoner number 46664 has taken his final journey, leaving behind an indelible legacy of justice and peace," the council said in a statement.
"As we reflect on the great man who led his country to freedom from apartheid, we know that his work is not yet complete."
The former president died at his Houghton home in Johannesburg around 8.50pm on Thursday. He will be buried at Qunu in the Eastern Cape next Sunday.
SADC executive director Boichoko Ditlhake said in the statement Mandela would be remembered globally for the hard work he put into making South Africa a better nation.
"The legacy of Nelson Mandela and his entire generation has guided us throughout our work and efforts.
"We have been inspired by his life. We appreciate that Tata’s passing, while deeply sad, had to arrive. We thank him and his family for all they have done for South Africa, Africa, and the world," Ditlhake said.
