SACP’s Mapaila reiterates criticism of ‘classist’ GNU

The South African Communist Party General Secretary Solly Mapaila says a person’s quality of life must not be determined by the salary they earn.

The SACP launched its Red October campaign in Emalahleni on Sunday.
The initiative is meant to outline the party's key objectives over the next 12 months.
Mapaila said the implementation of the National Health Insurance will be one of the focus areas.
“The implementation of the National Health Insurance is one of our priorities in this Red October campaign. We want a full rollout of this programme.”
Mapaila added that the SACP remained opposed to the privatisation of state-owned entities, saying the private sector “is always looking to profit from these entities and potentially leave behind the most vulnerable members of society”.
He also urged communal property associations to end their infighting and accept the end of their tenure.
He called for associations to move forward, acknowledge the conclusion of their term in office, and work towards a smooth transition.
“Communal property associations must allow internal elections and comply with democratic processes,” Mapaila added.
Touching on the government of national unity, Mapaila reiterated the SACP’s opposition to the ANC’s decision to include the DA in the coalition arrangement.
“We allowed forces like [DA Federal Council chair] Helen Zille to interfere in the ANC affairs, insult our comrades and dictate the president’s decisions. The GNU is a classist alliance, not a social cohesion alliance.”
