Sadtu calls for immediate closure of schools
Updated | By Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile
The South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) has called for schools to close until the Covid-19 peak has passed.

The union held an urgent special NEC on Tuesday, where they resolved to advise Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga to suspend classes immediately.
The union's secretary-general Mugwena Maluleke said learning cannot continue during the pandemic.
"We are in a crisis and every life matters.
"All evidence on the ground is that there is no effective teaching and learning that is taking place under the current conditions. The pandemic has led to pandemonium in the education sector.”

The union wants the department to use this period to prepare for the reopening of schools and fix the problems faced by the sector.
Maluleke said at the stage they are not planning to take any legal action to force the department to adhere to their call, but they will have a programme of action that will effectively ensure schools are closed.
