Saftu laments job losses

The South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) believes the latest job losses show the South African economy is not yet fully on the path to recovery.

According to Statistics SA, the quarterly report shows that the number of jobs in the country decreased by 16,000, from 9,749,000 in June 2018 to 9,733,000 in September 2018.

Saftu's Patrick Craven says the benefits of coming out of recession, are yet to come to fruition.

"It is particularly worrying that the biggest losses of jobs have been in some of the most important sectors of the economy, from a growth point of view - manufacturing, mining and construction," says Craven.

He believes the latest figures suggest the country won't see any short-term improvement in the employment sector.

In October of this year, President Cyril Ramaphosa hosted the Jobs Summit that brought together labour, business, community organisations and the government - as part of government's intervention to deal with rising unemployment.

Craven says the decrease in employment is exposing the "empty rhetoric" of the Jobs Summit.

"There is nothing on the ground being done to stop the bloodshed of the job losses."
