The commission released its 2017-2018 Equality Report on Thursday.

The report revealed 64% of Africans, 41% of Coloureds, 6% of Indians and 1% of whites live in poverty.

Researcher Shanelle van der Berg says land is a critical part of economic transformation.

"It is the key driver of wealth inequality as it currently persists in the country."

She adds land redistribution and restitution should be addressed honestly without political rhetoric.

"Those who do not hold political power often struggle to hold a political voice in our democracy."

Earlier this year, President Cyril Ramaphosa established a  Joint Constitutional Review Committee that will be looking into land expropriation without compensation.

Committee has received around 613 000 submissions on land expropriation without compensation and is currently crisscrossing the country holding public hearings into the matter.
