Sale of baby clothes under discussion - Bapela
Updated | By Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile
The Deputy Minister of Cooperate Governance and Traditional Affairs Obed Bapela says a decision to allow retailers to sell baby clothing is under discussion.
Parents have been up in arms asking the government to ensure that baby clothes, as well as other products such as bottles, be declared as essential items during the lockdown period.
The Tebeila Institute of Leadership, the African Institute for Human Rights and Constitutional Litigation have even gone as far as filing an urgent application at the Constitutional Court.

"This is under discussion because births are taking place and there are those families that cannot plan before the baby is born. This matter has also been raised by the gender commission. We want to make sure that if we open the section of children's clothing it will be only for babies aged 0-3 months."
Bapela says another challenge is that other parents also need to buy warm clothes for their older children.
