SAMA wants govt to ‘act now’ on SA students in Russia
The South Africa Medical Association says the government needs to act now, and assist the South African medical students facing deportation from Russia.
The more than 200 students are part of a medical study program facilitated by the two countries.
But they could be deported because they haven't received their allowances for several months.
SAMA's Mvuyisi Mzukwa says this not only poses a threat to their studies -- it's left many students traumatised and stressed.
He says they've been looking into the issue and found that an SA government-appointed middleman hasn't been keeping his end of the bargain.
“We have students who were told not to open an account, and those are the students who are apparently not getting financial support that they are supposed to be getting from the provincial government.
“Even the ones who are getting paid, there are so many inconsistencies. At time they would be paid for two months, and then two months there is nothing coming in.”
