Thousands of volunteers watched a five-year- old cancer patient battle crime as Batkid Friday, as San Francisco was turned into Gotham City for a day.
Batkid, the alter ego of Miles Scott, stopped a bank robbery by dreaded arch-villain the Riddler, defeated his nemesis the Penguin, as well as rescuing a damsel in distress, in a five-hour marathon of elaborately planned superheroic feats.
The city-wide adventure came about from an online campaign by the Make A Wish Foundation, which works to make the dreams of sick children a reality.
Two black Lamborghinis were converted into Batmobiles - driven by a grown-up Batman - as streets were closed for the stunt, and helicopters hovered overhead.
The San Francisco police chief, the chief federal prosecutor and an agent from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) all took part, charging the Riddler and the Penguin with conspiracy to commit bank robbery, kidnapping and obstruction of justice.
At the end of the adventure Batkid received the keys to the city from San Francisco's mayor.
Miles Scott, who lives with his parents and a younger brother in northern California, received some even better news recently: after years of treatment his leukemia is finally in remission.
He even got a message from President Barack Obama:
