Sanco condemns violent NW taxi clashes

The SA National Civic Organisation (Sanco) in North West has condemned the torching of five cars during violent clashes on Saturday, allegedly between taxi drivers and private cars operating as metered taxis at the Boitekong Mall near Rustenburg.

“We call for calm, restraint, and on law enforcement to stamp out the violence to ensure the safety of commuters. The situation should not be allowed to get out of hand,” provincial chairman Paul Sebegoe said in a statement.

Sebegoe urged authorities to do whatever was necessary to avert further violent confrontations, loss of lives, and destruction of property.

“Our communities deserve an efficient public transport system supported by zero-tolerance traffic law enforcement to protect defined routes, demarcated taxi ranks, and licensed taxis from illegal operators,” he said.

Two minibus taxis that operated between Rustenburg and Sondela were reportedly burnt about two kilometers from the mall on Friday night. They were allegedly torched because the owners also had private cars operating at the Boitekong Mall as metered taxis. At least five cars were burnt at the mall on Saturday.
