Sanco: Stop publishing matric results in newspapers
Updated | By ANA
The SA National Civic Organisation (Sanco) on Monday added its voice to calls urging the Department of Basic Education to stop publishing matric results in newspapers.
The tradition puts candidates under severe pressure leading to depression and in some instances suicide before the option of counselling is even considered. Printing errors do not allow for intervention and correction to manage unintended consequences,” said Sanco spokesman Jabu Mahlangu.
The SA Students Organisation (Sasco) has in recent years called on the department to stop publishing the results in newspapers.
Last year, the department relented and stopped publishing candidates’ names – opting to use identity and examination numbers instead.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga will release the 2015 matric results in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
Last week, monitoring body Umalusi announced that last year’s class performed badly compared to their 2014 counterparts.
Umalusi council chairman Professor John Volmink said the increased failure rate compared to 2014 was more than 3.5 percent, especially in subjects such as accounting, geography, history and mathematical literacy.
Volmink also said the 2015 examinations were fair, valid and credible. – African News Agency (ANA
