The SANDF soldiers were killed in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo in January amid the conflict with Rwandan-backed M23 rebels.

The Defence Ministry announced the deaths of nine South African soldiers on January 25. The killing of three more troops was announced three days later, while two more men died of their wounds.

On Thursday, the SANDF announced that there were delays, following a promise by army chief General Rudzani Maphwanya that the deceased would be home on Wednesday.

SANDF spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini said it was expected that the soldiers’ remains would arrive in Uganda on Saturday.

“Following delays that were encountered for the movement of the remains of the deceased from the DRC, to the United Nations Logistics Base in Entebbe Unganda, the SANDF can confirm that the movement is now under way. The movement is conducted by the UN,” Dlamini added.

Once in Uganda, the bodies of the slain soldiers will prepared for transportation to their countries of origin, including South Africa, Malawi, and Tanzania.
