Sandton woman arrested for illegal power connection
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
A 61-year-old woman from Sandton has been arrested for electricity theft.
Eskom's Khulu Phasiwe says the woman was connecting her house illegally after the power utility closed her electricity circuit.
Phasiwe says illegal electrical connections are a big problem the power utility is facing in the country.
He adds the assumption is that residents from informal settlements are the perpetrators, but this is not necessarily the case.
"Our experience has shown us that even big business, including people who are well off, like this person - she lives in Sandton and yet she was connecting electricity illegally," says Phasiwe.
He says an offender would be given a R6000 fine. However, the Sandton lady was a serial offender.
The woman appeared in the court on Monday and was released on a R1000 bail.
