Sanral to issue summons to those not paying e-tolls
Updated | By Suné du Toit
Sanral has confirmed they will start issuing summons to motorists who are refusing to pay their e-tolls accounts.
Spokesperson Vusi Mona said they had a duty in law as an agency of government to collect whatever is outstanding to the state.
Mona said Sanral has done everything to make it easier for motorists to pay their outstanding debt, but the time has come to act.
"We've tried to persuade those who are not paying, but those who have not heeded to our response, unfortunately, we now have to follow the instruments that are available to us in law and one of those is for us to issue summons," he said.
In response, Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) chairperson Wayne Duvenage said this is just the latest threat and he urges motorists to continue not paying their e-tolls.
"We hope though that if Sanral summons anybody it's one of Outa's members, because our contributing members fall under the e-tolls defence umbrella and we have a massive defence we will bring," Duvenage said.
Duvenage said there was no way that e-tolling could ever be deemed lawful.
