Over 5000 taxis from across Gauteng disrupted traffic on major routes in the province this morning, in protest against what drivers say are exorbitant interest rates on Toyota Quantam vehicles.

Santaco's Thulani Qwabe says the proposed date for the next taxi strike is 12 July, but would depend on the feedback they receive from the private sector and government.

The South African Taxi Finance Holdings has proposed a 3% decrease in the current interest rate of 28%, but Santaco says this is not enough.

"What you saw today is nothing. It is not only Gauteng that will be affected but the whole country. The 12 July is on Wednesday and may be even last for three days," Qwabe said.

Thousands of taxi commuters were left stranded due to the strike.

The strike caused chaos on major Gauteng routes such as the N14, N3 and the R21, making it impossible for many South Africans to get to work.
