SAPS fire rubber bullets, teargas to disperse striking UP workers
Police on Monday fired rubber bullets and teargas in an effort to disperse striking workers at the University of Pretoria's Hatfield campus.
Members of the National Education, Health, and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) downed tools two weeks ago due to a wage dispute with the university.
The union is demanding a 7% wage increase, a 13th cheque and a once-off bonus, while the university has made what is said to be a final offer of 4%.
Videos circulating online showed protesters and students running from police.
In a statement on Monday, UP Chief Operating Officer Sandile Mthiyane stated that the protesters were unlawfully disrupting academic activities.
The university warned it would take action against those found to be involved in the incidents.
“South African Police Services officers engaged the striking staff and asked them to follow the picketing rules. Despite repeated requests for strikers to return to the designated picketing area, the protesters refused to leave the campus,” said Mthiyane.
“We take all reports of the use of force seriously and are currently gathering information to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this incident. Our priority is always the safety and well-being of all staff and students.
“We strongly condemn the illegal disruption of academic activity on our campus. We want to assure our community that we will take relevant action against any individuals found to be involved in these incidents.
“We are committed to resolving the labour dispute through constructive dialogue and within the boundaries of the law,” added Mthiyane.
