SARB launches Mandela banknotes
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has launched a series of commemorative banknotes as part of the centenary of former president Nelson Mandela.
The late struggle icon would have celebrated his 100th birthday on July 18.
The commemorative series also included a R5 coin.
Speaking at the launch in Pretoria on Friday, Reserve Bank governor Lesetja Kganyago said Mandela promoted reconciliation.
"As the first president of our democratic era, Nelson Mandela promoted reconciliation, led our reintegration into the global economy, strengthened the framework for macroeconomic management and ushered in our constitution."
Kganyago said the bank decided to capture Mandela on the banknotes and R5 coin because the late struggle icon touched the lives of many people in the country.
"What could be more fitting than commemorating his life in an instrument that we are all using? Money touches all of us, young and old."
