SARB: Probe ongoing into Xitsonga spelling on new notes
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
The South African Reserve Bank says investigations are ongoing following complaints about the spelling of some words on the new R100 note.
This follows several complaints from Xistsonga speakers against the spelling of Reserve Bank from “Banginkulu to Bangikulu”.
SARB introduced the country’s upgraded banknotes and coins in May with enhanced security features and new designs.
These include the South African flag, the preamble of the constitution in micro-lettering and the Big 5 depicted as a family.
The Pan South African Language Board previously clarified that the spelling changes on the upgraded notes and coins are correct.
The Xitsonga National Language Body also confirmed that the Reserve Bank consulted with them before changes were made and the terms were verified.
The body said the word ‘Bangikulu’, as reflected on the upgraded banknotes, is the correct and accurate spelling.
Speaking during SARB’s annual general meeting on Friday, Governor Lesetja Kganyago said investigations are ongoing.
“The SARB consults extensively with expert organisations on the use of national symbols, languages and designs on our currency, including the Pan South African Language Board, which is the statutory authority on our 12 official languages.
“Having received complaints from the members Vha Tsonga community over the spelling of the Xitsonga word for Reserve Bank use on the upgraded R100 note, the SARB has reached out to the Pan SALB to revisit the matter and we await feedback.”
