He was suspended on Thursday amid allegations of suspicious and unusual transactions into his personal bank account.

International law firm Hogan Lowels has been appointed to investigate the allegations surrounding Makwakwa.

"Sars will follow due process to investigate these serious allegations."

Sars commissioner Tom Moyane has appointed two executives to act in Makwakwa's position as chief officer for business and individual tax at the revenue service.

Firdous Sallie has been appointed as acting chief officer for business and individual tax, while Tau Mashigo will act as chief officer for digital information services and technology with immediate effect.

In a statement, Sars said Sallie and Mashigo have a wealth of experience and expertise in their respective fields.

Sallie has been at Sars since 2009 having served as a group executive in two departments.

"Sallie has been instrumental in Sars' interface with taxpayers and is a key member of the business and individual tax leadership team," Sars said.

Mashigo joined the tax collecting agency in 2007. He was previously responsible for managing information technology.

His role has recently been re-configured to service delivery group executive, supporting a user base of over 14 000 employees using a vast portfolio of applications currently enabling the administration of tax and customs.
