SARS: File your tax return or face a fine

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has urged South Africans who have not filed their tax return to do so urgently - or face steep fines.

Tax season closed on Wednesday, three weeks earlier than the previous year.

SARS spokesperson Janine Mqulwana says administration penalties will apply to late applicants.

"These range from R250 to R15000 depending on your income," says Mqulwana.

She warns that delaying it further will only prompt the taxman to take stronger action.

Mqulwana says 2018 tax return has gone up by 2.1% compared to the previous year.

"This year we have received 5.665 million, and that is a really good sign that taxpayers have adopted to short tax period."

Mqulwana adds a total 96.1% of expected returns from individuals were submitted on time, unlike 94% in 2017.
