SA’s Covid-19 positivity rate shoots up to over 10%

The Covid-19 positivity rate in South Africa has increased to 10.7% on Monday evening.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says this was out of the 21 302 tests conducted over the latest 24-hour cycle.
There were a total of 2 273 new positive cases.
The majority of new cases comes from Gauteng with 1 909 new infections picked up in the last 24 hours.
“The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng (84%), followed Western Cape accounting for 5%. KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 3%; Mpumalanga and North West each accounted for 2% respectively; Free State and Limpopo each accounted for 1%. Eastern Cape and Northern Cape each accounted for less than 1% of today’s new cases,” said the NICD in a statement.
An additional 25 Covid-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 89 822.
There has been an increase of 79 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours with 2 328 people currently admitted in both public and private health facilities.
On the vaccine front, a total of 166 074 vaccine doses were administered in the last 24 hours.
