Sassa: Covid-19 grant paid to 4 million South Africans

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) says more than 4 million South Africans have received the R350 Covid-19 social relief grant.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the temporary grant for the unemployed and those who do not receive any other grant from the state, as part of the government's expanded social relief efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic. 

Sassa spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi says 4.4 million beneficiaries have been paid.

"There is an amount of about 2 million people who were rejected. This number consists of people who might be part of the grant system, some of them could be appearing on UIF, could be appearing on NASFAS or could be getting a form of income somewhere else.”

Letsatsi says applicants need to submit accurate information otherwise the system will reject their application.
