SASSA suspends cash payments amid riots, looting
Updated | By Karabo Tebele
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced that all deliveries of cash will be halted due to the riots and looting in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
The cash-in-transit industry has notified the agency that cash delivery at pay points will be suspended.
This comes after parts of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal went up in flames when disgruntled communities looted retails stores, liquor shops, barricaded freeways, and burnt down malls.
Jabulani Mall is the latest outlet to be looted by community members in Soweto.
SASSA CEO Totsi Memela says the safety of beneficiaries cannot be compromised.
"We have to protect our beneficiaries as they might be caught up in the crossfire especially those in high-risk areas.
"Payments will be made as soon as the situation is calm, and it is safe."
