SAUS calls for immediate axing of Nzimande, Khosa

South African Students Union's president Asive Dlanjwa has called for the immediate dismissal of Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande and NSFAS chairperson Ernest Khosa.

The call comes after the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) accused Nzimande and Khosa of receiving kickbacks from companies doing business with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme.

Outa released a series of leaked recordings of alleged conversations between Nzimande, NSFAS, Khosa and the South African Communist Party detailing the payments of kickbacks from service providers.

Nzimande, Khosa and the SACP have all denied the allegations.

Dlanjwa says justice needs to prevail for students who suffered in the hands of Nzimande and Khosa.

"The first step is their removal, but what we are going to do is, we have written to the president, we will carry on to agitate, as soon as schools open, we will being to agitate on the ground for his removal in the event that the president cannot heed to our cry. If it needs there also be justice for the students that have suffered at the hands of the two criminally implicated individuals."

Meanwhile, Education activist Hendrick Makaneta says Nsfas must continue disbursing funds to students and not be derailed by allegations of corruption.

Makaneta says he believes the student fund has plans in place to deal with backlog that was created in 2023.

"We know that the expansion of Nsfas cannot be done overnight. Hence, in the meantime, the scheme should find a way to prioritise critical skills that will generate returns to the economy.

"Nsfas alone may not be able to identify critical skills with a view to funding such programmes first before others.

"The scheme should collaborate with the Department of Labour and the Department of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation to identify all the critical skills that require urgent funding and do everything possible to safeguard such skills with the limited resources at their disposal."
