SAUS wants conviction, harsh sentence for Theuns du Toit

The South African Union of Students say they expect the book to be thrown at former University of Stellenbosch student Theuns du Toit.
Stellenbosch University expelled student Theuns du Toit for urinating on the belongings of another student in May this year.
In a video, which was widely shared on social media, Du Toit can be seen urinating on the books and a laptop of a black student Babalo Ndwayana in one of the residences.
The NPA announced on Friday that Du Toit would be facing criminal charges.
"We also welcome directly the decision of the NPA because we think this will be the step in the right direction and this will mean that the institution will be headed at right direction,” SAUS national spokesperson Asive Dlanjwa says.
"We believe that this will be the about the institution dealing with its racism and discrimination against marginalized communities, we cannot believe that but we do think this is a step in the right direction and we need to have more conviction and this will get through the construction and we need more convictions and begin to criminalize the discrimination and racism in institutions of higher learning.”
Dlanjwa adds that the student union is expecting a harsher conviction.
"We are obviously expecting that it will lead to a conviction. We are hoping that conviction will rather be a harsh one, so that will be able to send the message to other institutions across the country that there will be repercussions.”
