SAWS warns of fires caused by windy weather in several provinces
Updated | By Mapaballo Borotho
The South African Weather Service on Monday warned of strong winds and dry conditions that could lead to runaway veld fires in parts of the country.
Weather forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela says affected provinces include KwaZulu-Natal, North West and Limpopo.
Thobela said members of the public are urged to take extra precautions when starting open fires.
“Fire index values were very dangerous for areas like the eastern areas of the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, the central and western parts of North West, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, and Limpopo.
“The cause for runaway fires is strong winds, which spread the fire, especially in a dry area. Part of it is what’s happening in KZN currently. We have strong winds over the area, with winds expected to reach about 30 to 40km/h,” added Thobela.
