The tremor was recorded to have hit at 06:56 am with the epicentre near Randfontein.

Chief scientist at the Council of Geoscience, Dr Eldridge Kgaswane, says the tremor occurred around the gold mining areas on the West Rand, where seismic disturbances are common.

"This earthquake occurred near Harmony Doornkop mine, which is west of Johannesburg, and we can confidently say in our experience that this area is in the West Rand gold mine region which is prominent in experiencing mining-related seismic disturbances.

"At this stage, we cannot say for sure if this recent tremor was mining related.”

Kgaswane says another tremor with a magnitude of 2.6 was recorded in the same region on Wednesday.

Residents in parts of Johannesburg took to Twitter to raise concerns over a second tremor in one week.

Tebogo Mathe (21) who is a resident in Naledi, Soweto says she was woken up by the strong movement of the ground.

"The tremor lasted for about 60 seconds and it’s not the first time this happened, it happened on Wednesday again, however that one was shorter compared to today's one".

Mathe says she didn’t panic because everything in the house was still in place.

"I was with my gran in the house at the time of the tremor and when I woke up to ask her about it, she didn’t panic as well ".
