Security guard injured as construction workers protest in Sandton
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
Gauteng police have been deployed to Benmore shopping centre in Sandton due to a protest by approximately 500 construction workers.

It is understood that workers have not been paid their wages for two weeks.
Gauteng police spokesperson Kay Makhubele says protesters overpowered a security guard and stole his gun.
Makhubele says police are monitoring the situation.
“The police were summoned at Benmore were protestors barricaded the road at a construction site. It is alleged that in the early hours of the morning the protestors were confronted with security guards who shot at the protestors by shotgun with a rubber bullet but the protestors managed to overpower a security guard and took his firearm away. So far the police are still at the scene finding out where the fire arm is and monitoring the situation on the area.”
Johannesburg metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar says the injured guard was assessed by paramedics.
“The workers attacked a security guard and he jumped inside a patrol car and drove off with JMPD patrol car to get away from the violent crowd. More officers have been sent to the location and the situation is currently under control.
“The security guard has been robbed off his short gun and cell phone, he has been inured and attended to by paramedics at the scene.”
No arrests have been made.
