Sentencing of former Parktown Boys assistant coach postponed

Sentencing of former Parktown Boys assistant coach postponed

Emotions ran high in the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court following the news that former Parktown Boys’ assistant water polo coach Collan Rex will only be sentenced next month.

Rex appeared in court on Wednesday but the case was postponed due to outstanding reports.

He has been convicted of 144 counts of sexual assault and 12 counts of common assault.

However, he has been acquitted of charges including attempted murder, rape, sexual grooming and exposing minors to pornography.

Rees Mann, of the South African Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse, says the constant postponements are unacceptable.

"I am outraged regarding this postponement - everybody was ready to go ahead with sentence today and only the state’s social workers caused the delay. Today would have been an important day in the healing process for these boys, but now they will have to go home and suffer in silence for the next few weeks while Rex gets to go home.”

Mann says the postponements will only delay the victims’ healing process.

"These boys who were courageous in coming forward have had to relive and be traumatised time and time again.

“Their healing process can start when justice has been done and there's a sense fo finality."

The case has been postponed to the 27th November 2018.
