Gauteng police arrested seven suspects in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg, following a shootout involving taxi operators on Tuesday.
Police recovered a loaded firearm and almost 50 cartridges.
Provincial police spokesperson Mathapelo Peters says reports suggest that an unconfirmed number of taxi operators were attacked by unknown suspects on the Golden Highway.
"Preliminary reports suggest that between 07:00 and 08:00 on Tuesday morning, an unconfirmed number of taxi operators were on the Golden Highway (R553) near Migson Manor when unknown suspects travelling in a double cab Toyota bakkie and a Toyota Avanza allegedly fired shots at the operators.”
The four suspects were apprehended by police at a house in Lenasia south.
Peters adds that the two other suspects who had remained in the Toyota Avanza were arrested, while the seventh suspect driving the bakkie was also arrested.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Lenasia Magistrate Court on charges of attempted murder and possession of an illegal firearm.
