Cape Town police have confirmed that seven men have been killed after their bakkie was hit by a train at the Buttskop railway level crossing in Blackheath.

Police spokesperson, Andre Traut says the men were being transported to work earlier this morning when the train smashed into their vehicle.

"The circumstances surrounding a culpable homicide vehicle accident are being investigated," says Traut.

Metrorail says the train's crew was left in shock.

It too has launched an immediate investigation into the cause of the accident.

Spokesperson, Riana Scott says no train commuters were hurt.

"We express our sincerest condolences to the families of the accident victims," says Scott.

In 2010, 10 children died when the minibus taxi they were travelling in was struck by a train at the same level crossing.
