Seven suspected highway robbers in court
Updated | By Sune du Toit
Police spokeswoman Colonel Ronel Otto said the group picked up people at hiking spots along the N1 on the pretext of offering them lifts.
"The hitch hikers were then robbed of their belongings including cash and then left on the side of the road. They were arrested on Wednesday after a victim spotted five of them and followed them to Musina," Otto said.
The man informed the police and the five, who included a woman, were arrested in Musina. Otto added that two more were arrested after a follow up investigation.
"Indications are that the suspects could be linked to several cases of armed robbery and abductions, especially on foreigners. The suspects tried their luck with police by alleging that they were members of the Hawks busy with an investigation, but they were unsuccessful," she said.
They all face charges of armed robbery.
