Shootout on the R21 leaves one potential bike, caravan thief dead

One suspect was fatally wounded and four were arrested during a shootout with police on the R21 highway in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo police also recovered two pistols that were used by the suspects. 


"Police have been looking for suspects that are responsible for stealing motorbikes, boats, and caravans in the province," he explains. 


"Through police intelligence, information was received that the suspects will be stealing a motorbike somewhere in Pretoria.


"In the early hours of this morning six suspects who were driving a Toyota Hilux with a trailer and a Toyota RunX went to steal a motorbike in Wierdebrug, Pretoria," he says.

"Police followed the suspects until at R21 highway towards Kempton Park. As the suspects were accosted they started shooting at the police and a shootout ensued."


One suspect was fatally shot, one suspect was wounded and taken to hospital under police guard, and three suspects were arrested. 


Two firearms were recovered from the suspects. 


Police are still searching for the fourth suspect that is still at large
