Shoprite strike: Contingency plans in place
Updated | By Jacaranda News
The Shoprite Group says contingency plans are in place to ensure stores remain open over the festive season.

Around 30 000 workers affiliated to the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (Saccawu) downed tools on Friday morning.
There are demanding a revision of working hours and safe transport for those who work late.
The group says the contingency plans will ensure that stores remain open.
"It is a priority for the Shoprite Group to resolve the matters that have been discussed over a period of time through the appropriate channels in the interest of all our employees, as well as our customers.”

Saccawu's Lucas Ramatlhodi says the disputes date back to 2015, when the company changed conditions of employment.
"The company practically undermined the decent jobs agenda and job security. Shoprite Checkers decided to change its operational patters, which is their prerogative and within their rights. However, they did not engage with the Union," Ramatlodi says.
