The trio is believed to have been travelling from Gauteng to the Eastern Cape when they stopped at OR Tambo Street in the Free Street to take a break from the lengthy trip.

Provincial police spokesperson Thabo Covane says the men allege they were woken up by a knock on the windscreen at about 1am before shots were fired.

“According to their statements an unknown African male pointed them with a firearm and shot at the 34 year old victim sitting in the car. The bullet hit him on the upper left arm.

“The victims were shocked to see approximately eleven African males outside on the grounds of the filling station. The driver speedingly drove away as gunshots continued accompanied by a loud bang.”

Covane adds the employees at the petrol station called law enforcement after hearing a loud bang from their rest room.

“The complainant alleges that the loud bang occurred as the suspects were blasting the Automatic Teller Machine at the filling station,” says Covane.

No money was taken from the ATM.

“The 34 year old victim who was shot at was rushed to hospital where he is receiving treatment. A case of Malicious damage to property and attempted murder was opened at Parkweg Police Station,” says Covane.

Police are still on the hunt for the group of suspects who fled on foot.
