Singh claims Zondo commission fed info to witnesses

Former Transnet and Eskom CFO Anoj Singh has made serious allegations of malfeasance against officials who work at the commission of inquiry into state capture.

He believes someone at the commission may have fed information to a witness, who then implicated him in corrupt dealings.

Singh appeared at the commission on Friday to respond to allegations related to his time at Transnet.

He was questioned extensively about the testimony of his former driver, who was referred to as ‘Witness 3’ by the commission.

The witness told the commission that he used to frequently drive Singh to the Gupta residence where he would leave with a bag full of money. He said on one occasion Singh offered to buy him lunch and asked him to get the money from the bag in a boot, that is where he claimed he saw lots of R200 notes.

Singh has denied ever being driven to the Gupta home by ‘Witness 3’, but admitted he had been there at least 10 times or less between 2011 and 2012.

"I did on occasion have the opportunity to go to the Gupta residence. Mr Chair, the reason for my visit to the Gupta home was based on functional reasons, there were religious functions held in the Indian community and I would be invited there."

But he said his relationship with the Guptas was not intimate and he only received an invite to their functions after meeting some of them at the New Age Breakfasts.

‘Witness 3’ had told the commission at times Singh would ask him to take him to Knox Vaults where he would enter with the bag of money and come out with it empty.

Singh confirmed that he had four safety deposit boxes at Knox Vaults for each of his family members but denied ever been driven there by ‘Witness 3’ or telling him about it.

When asked how ‘Witness 3’ knew about the safety deposit boxes, he said he was as puzzled, but said he believed someone at the commission fed him the information.

"The issue of Knox Vaults and ‘Witness 3’, as it relates to me could have only emanated from the commission itself and the knowledge the commission had.”

The commission's investigator in this matter immediately sent a WhatsApp message to evidence leader, Advocate Anton Myburgh, to inform him that the commission found out about Knox Vaults from ‘Witness 3’.

Myburgh said the investigator is willing to provide an affidavit under oath.
