Sisulu defends appointment of ‘failed minister’ at DWS

Water and Sanitation Minister Lindiwe Sisulu has defended the department’s decision to appoint Susan Shabangu as a water services adviser.
Shabangu’s appointment is not the first to be questioned - Mo Shaik and Menzi Simelane also sat on her advisory team earlier in the year despite allegedly benefitting from state capture.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has been especially vocal in its criticism of Shabangu’s appointment, describing her as a “failed minister” and questioning the value she would add to the department.
But Sisulu told the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) on Tuesday that there was nothing untoward with Shabangu’s appointment.
“Susan Shabangu has more experience, more understanding of politics, more understanding of government than you could ever have,” she told MPs.
“She has the necessary experience.”

DA urges govt to implement sector-specific health protocols
The country will move to level 3 of the lockdown on June 1, which will see more industries reopen. The DA's policy head Gwen Ngwenya said on Tuesday that sector-specific protocols will ensure workers' safety.
Shabangu was among a string of ANC MPs to resign from Parliament last year.
“The fact that she is not in Parliament is very similar to the fact that Helen Zille is not in Parliament. We might easily say the same thing about her or any other member of the DA that is not in Parliament," Sisulu said defiantly.
